GPA = Σ (grade points × credit hours) ÷ Σ credit hours

Grade points follow the common plus/minus 4.0 scale: A and A+ are both 4.0, A− is 3.7, B+ is 3.3, and so on. Your catalogue is the authority if it differs.

The credit weighting is the whole point.

A B in a four-credit course moves your average almost twice as far as an A in a one-credit lab. Students consistently misjudge a term because they read their grades as a list rather than as a weighted set, and the small course with the flattering grade contributes least. Enter the real credit hours from your registration record rather than assuming every course is three credits.

Questions about semester gpa

Does an A+ count above 4.0?: Rarely on an unweighted scale. Most US institutions cap the plus at 4.0, so a term of A+ grades and a term of A grades produce the same GPA. The minus, however, costs you: an A− is 3.7.
Do pass/fail courses count?: Normally they earn credit without contributing grade points, so they are excluded from the average entirely. That protects a GPA and also hides the grade, which some graduate programmes read unfavourably in prerequisite subjects.
How do withdrawals affect it?: A W usually carries no points and no credit, so it does not touch the GPA — but it can affect satisfactory academic progress for financial aid, which is a separate test with its own thresholds.
