Academic level, deadline and length. Not how urgent you sound, not how much you seem able to pay, and not what you were quoted somewhere else. The whole rate card is printed below.
Every figure is computed from the same rate card printed below — the two cannot disagree.

Editing an existing draft is charged at half the writing rate. Technical and dissertation work carry the multipliers shown in the estimator above.

It is the double-spaced convention most departments assume when they set a page count, and it makes the rate card comparable across orders. You are charged on the word count you give us, converted at 275 — never on the physical pages of a file.
After a manager reads the brief and you approve the firm quote. Nothing is taken while a brief is being read, and nothing is charged at all if we decline it.
We tell you before starting, with the revised figure and the reason. You can accept it, reduce the scope, or walk away with nothing charged. We do not start work on one price and invoice another.
On orders above $190 you can pay half at approval and half at delivery. The total is identical either way — there is no financing charge and no discount for paying up front.
Late delivery by us is refunded automatically, without a claim to argue. Everything else follows the published policy: revision is offered first, then a partial or full refund depending on the stage. The exclusions are printed beside the guarantees rather than buried.
The rate card covers the great majority of work. Where a brief needs a specialist we genuinely have to go and find, the manager quotes by hand and explains the difference before you commit.
A manager reads the actual brief and confirms one fixed figure — which is sometimes lower than the estimator suggests.
