A four-credit course moves your GPA twice as far as a two-credit one. That is the whole mechanism, and it is why a strong grade in a small lab rarely rescues a term and why one failed core module can undo three good electives.
It also explains the mismatch students most often report against their own transcript: averaging your semester GPAs together gives a different number, because semesters carry different credit loads. The cumulative figure recomputes across every credit attempted rather than treating each semester as one equal unit.
