Academic Planning · pattern A, Numeric fields

The score you need on the final, stated plainly.

Enter your mark so far, the weight of the work already counted and the weight of the final. The result is the score the final has to reach for you to land on your target — including when that score is impossible.

Inputs

The formula used

Needed = (target − current mark × completed weight) ÷ final weight

Current mark is your average on work marked so far; completed weight is the share of the module that work represents. The two must agree — a 68 average over 60% of the module contributes 40.8 points.

If the figure above is over 100, the target is out of reach on this module — check whether the weights you entered are right, then plan against a lower boundary rather than a hope.

What the number actually tells you.

The calculation is simple and the value is in seeing it early. A required score of 92 on a final worth 40% is not a revision plan, it is a signal to speak to your module leader now, while mitigating circumstances, extensions and resit options are still open. A required score of 41, equally, tells you where not to spend the next fortnight.

Questions about final grade

What if the number comes out above 100?
Then the target cannot be reached from where you are, whatever happens in the exam. That is worth knowing before revision starts. Recheck the weights, then aim at the boundary that is still reachable.
Can I use this for a pass mark?
Yes — set the target to your pass threshold, commonly 40 or 50. The result is the minimum score the final needs, and any margin above it is insurance against a hard paper.
Does it handle a hurdle requirement?
No. Some modules require a minimum on the exam regardless of the overall average. The arithmetic here ignores that rule, so check your handbook for a hurdle before relying on a low required score.

A calculator handles the arithmetic. It cannot teach you the method.

If the number is not the part you are stuck on, that is what the service is for — a specialist who explains the working, not just the answer.

Grade point values, rounding rules and academic standing thresholds are set by your institution and vary widely. Nothing here is an official record of your standing.
