Academic Planning · pattern B, Repeating rows

Where you stand in a module, weight by weight.

Enter each assessment's weight and the score you got. The panel reports your mark on the work marked so far, your standing overall, and what the outstanding work would need to produce.

Inputs

The formula used

Mark = Σ (score × weight) ÷ Σ weight marked

Dividing by the weight completed rather than by 100 answers the question students actually ask mid-term: how am I doing so far, ignoring work not yet marked.

Mark on work completed

70.0%

Across the 30% of the module marked so far.

If you score 70 on the rest

A weighted grade is not the average of your marks.

An 80 on a piece worth 10% and a 55 on a piece worth 50% do not average to 67.5. Weight by weight they come to roughly 59, and the difference is the whole reason modules publish a weighting scheme. Leave the score blank on anything unmarked and the tool reports two figures: where you stand on work completed, and where you stand overall if the rest scored nothing.

Questions about grade

What do I need on the final to pass?
Work backwards: subtract the points already earned from your target, then divide by the final's weight. The final grade calculator does exactly that and will tell you when the required score is above 100.
Are marks rounded up at the boundary?
Sometimes, and only by a fixed amount — commonly 0.5 of a percentage point, occasionally within a discretionary band decided by an exam board. Never plan on landing 0.4 below a boundary and being lifted over it.
Do capped resit marks change the arithmetic?
Yes. A capped resit contributes its cap rather than its actual score, so enter the capped figure. The weighting is unchanged; only the score you feed in is.

A calculator handles the arithmetic. It cannot teach you the method.

If the number is not the part you are stuck on, that is what the service is for — a specialist who explains the working, not just the answer.

Grade point values, rounding rules and academic standing thresholds are set by your institution and vary widely. Nothing here is an official record of your standing.
