The formula used

CGPA = Σ (grade point × credits) ÷ Σ credits

Grade points come from your institution's letter bands — O is 10, A+ is 9, and so on down. Credits are the weight the university assigns each subject, not the hours you spent on it.

CGPA is credit-weighted, not an average of averages.

A four-credit subject moves your CGPA twice as far as a two-credit one, which is why a strong grade in a small lab rarely rescues a semester. The cumulative figure recomputes across every credit you have attempted, so it is not the mean of your semester GPAs — averaging averages ignores that semesters carry different credit loads, and that single mistake accounts for most of the mismatches students report against their own grade sheets.

Questions about cgpa

How do I convert CGPA to a percentage?: Many Indian universities publish CGPA × 9.5, a formula that originates with CBSE. Others use × 10 or a subject-wise table. Use the multiplier printed on your own grade sheet — there is no national rule, and an evaluator will not accept a self-chosen formula.
Does a backlog count in CGPA?: Usually yes, and often twice: the failed attempt sits in credits attempted while the pass supplies the grade point. Some institutions replace the failure outright. Read your examination regulations rather than assuming the kinder version applies.
Is 8.5 CGPA good?: For most Indian postgraduate admissions and campus recruitment it is comfortably competitive. For selective foreign programmes the CGPA is only one input, and it is read alongside the institution's own grading distribution rather than converted to a 4.0 figure.
