Why you add totals rather than average percentages.

Three papers scoring 90% on 20 marks, 60% on 100 marks and 70% on 80 marks do not average to 73.3%. Summing gives 18 + 60 + 56 = 134 out of 200, which is 67% — six points lower, because the paper you did worst on carried the most marks. Averaging percentages silently reweights every paper as equal, and it is the most common arithmetic error in this calculation.

Questions about marks percentage

Is 70% a good percentage?
In the UK it is a first, the top classification. In the US it is roughly a C. In India it varies by board and university. The number is meaningless without the marking culture attached to it.
How do I handle optional questions?
Count only the marks available on the questions that were assessed. If a paper offers 120 marks and counts your best 100, the denominator is 100.
Should I round up?
Report what the arithmetic gives. Institutions apply their own rounding at the boundary, usually a fixed half-point, and a self-rounded figure that disagrees with the record looks worse than the original.
