The common US convention is one hour of class plus two to three hours of independent work per credit hour per week. It is a planning figure, not a rule, and dissertation or studio credits break it entirely.

What a credit hour is supposed to represent.

A credit hour is a unit of expected effort, not of difficulty or of contact time alone. Fifteen credits implies roughly 45 hours a week including class — a full working week that students routinely underestimate because only the contact hours appear on a timetable. Labs and studios are the usual surprise: many carry one credit for three contact hours, so they cost time out of proportion to their weight in your GPA.

Questions about credit hour

How many credits is full-time?: In the US, usually 12 for undergraduate enrolment and 15 to graduate on time in four years. Financial aid, visa conditions and insurance eligibility often key off the 12-credit line specifically, so dropping below it has consequences beyond your degree progress.
Are ECTS credits the same thing?: No. One ECTS credit is around 25 to 30 hours of total student workload, and a full year is 60 ECTS against roughly 30 US semester credits. Conversion is institution-specific and should come from the receiving institution.
Do labs count for less?: Usually they carry fewer credits per contact hour — one credit for a three-hour lab is common. They cost more time per grade point than any lecture course, which is worth knowing when you plan a term.
