Evaluators map band to band rather than dividing, because a 6.0 CGPA is a pass in a 10-point system and a 2.4 GPA is a warning in a 4.0 one. The two scales are not linear transforms of each other.

No reliable single formula exists between these scales. For an application, use the receiving institution's table or a credential evaluator — not this page, and not division.

Why dividing by 2.5 is wrong.

Dividing a 10-point CGPA by 2.5 assumes both scales start at zero and rise identically, but they do not. A 5.0 CGPA is a bare pass in most Indian systems, while the 2.0 GPA it converts to sits at the academic-standing boundary in the US — different meanings for the same relative position. Band mapping preserves standing; division preserves only arithmetic.

Questions about cgpa to gpa

Do US universities accept a converted CGPA?
Most prefer the original CGPA with the institution's grading key, and many recompute it themselves. Where they require a converted figure they will name the evaluator to use.
Why does WES give a different number?
Because evaluators weight by credits and by the grading distribution of your specific institution, which a band table cannot see. Their figure is the one that counts.
Is a 4.0 GPA the same as a 10 CGPA?
Only in the sense that both are the maximum. A 10 CGPA is exceptionally rare in most Indian systems while a 4.0 GPA, though also rare, is more commonly approached — the distributions differ.
