The formula used

Contribution to final mark = (your score ÷ marks available) × weight

Weight is the share of the module, not the marks on the paper. A 100-mark exam worth 40% and a 20-mark quiz worth 40% control exactly the same amount of your grade.

A ten-mark weekly quiz set twelve times can control more of your grade than a single long essay, and a hundred-mark exam worth 30% is worth less than a fifty-mark project worth 40%. Converting everything to its share of the module makes the comparison honest, and usually reveals that one under-attended component is quietly setting the ceiling on the whole module.

Questions about assignment weight

Where do I find the real weights?: The module handbook or the assessment brief, both of which are the contractual version. Announcements in class are sometimes provisional and sometimes wrong.
What if weights change mid-term?: That normally requires a formal amendment and notification. Recalculate from the amended scheme, and keep the notice — it matters if the recorded mark later disagrees.
Should I skip low-weight work?: Rarely worth it. Low-weight components are usually the cheapest marks in the module per hour spent, and some carry hurdle requirements that gate the rest regardless of their weight.
