density = uses of a term ÷ total words × 100

A short stop-word list removes articles, prepositions, pronouns and auxiliary verbs. Everything else is counted as written, so plural and singular forms are treated as different words.

Repetition is a structural signal.

A word appearing at unusual density is either the argument or a crutch. If the most frequent content word in a 2,000-word essay is neither the topic nor a key concept, the draft has drifted, and the frequency list finds that faster than rereading does. For coursework this is a revision tool, not an SEO one — the metric was borrowed from search-engine writing and behaves differently on argument prose.

Questions about keyword density

Is there an ideal keyword density?
Not for academic writing. In search-engine copywriting figures around one to two per cent circulate, but that convention has no bearing on an essay, where the right frequency is whatever the argument needs.
Why are common words excluded?
Because they would dominate every list. The, of and and are the three most frequent words in almost any English text, and knowing that tells you nothing about your draft.
Can I use this to check for plagiarism?
No. It counts your own words and has no access to any other source. It is a revision aid, not a similarity checker.
