Writing & Research · pattern C, Text in

An APA reference, assembled from its parts.

Enter the details of a source and the tool assembles an APA-style reference-list entry and in-text citation. It applies the element order; it cannot check the details you supply.

Inputs

The formula used

Author, A. A. (Year). Title of work. Source. https://doi.org/…

APA 7th edition orders elements as author, date, title, source. Italics apply to the title of the container — a journal or book — and are not applied here; apply them in your own document.

In-text citation

(Kahneman, 2011)

In-text citation. The full reference-list entry is below — check it against your own style guide edition before submitting.

Reference list entry
Kahneman, D. (2011). Thinking, fast and slow. Farrar, Straus and Giroux.

Worked steps

  1. 1Kahneman, D. (2011). Thinking, fast and slow. Farrar, Straus and Giroux.

Order of elements: author, date, title, source, locator. Italics are not applied here — apply them to the source title in your document.

Consistency earns the marks, not the tool.

Markers check whether every in-text citation has a matching reference-list entry, whether the format is applied consistently, and whether the sources are real and relevant. A generator gets the element order right and knows nothing about whether the page range is correct or the author's initials are the right way round. Check every generated entry against the source itself before submitting.

Questions about apa citation

Which APA edition should I use?
The 7th, unless your department says otherwise. Ask specifically, because a submission formatted to the 6th edition looks inconsistent against a marking scheme built for the 7th.
How do I cite a source with many authors?
In APA 7, list up to twenty in the reference list. In text, use the first author followed by et al. from three authors onward.
Do I need a DOI?
Include one where it exists, formatted as a full https link. Where there is no DOI and the source is online, use the URL; for print sources, neither is needed.

A calculator handles the arithmetic. It cannot teach you the method.

If the number is not the part you are stuck on, that is what the service is for — a specialist who explains the working, not just the answer.

Counts, readability scores and citation formats are guides. Your institution's word-count rule and its preferred style-guide edition override anything shown here.
