An MLA works-cited entry, assembled from its parts.

Enter the source details for an MLA 9th-edition works-cited entry and the matching in-text citation. The tool handles element order; verifying the details is your job.

Inputs

The formula used

Author. "Title." Container, Contributors, Version, Number, Publisher, Date, Location.

MLA 9 builds every entry from the same template of nine elements, which is why an unfamiliar source type still has a predictable format. In-text citation is author and page, with no comma between them.

In-text citation

Order of elements: author, date, title, source, locator. Italics are not applied here — apply them to the source title in your document.

MLA is a template, not a list of source types.

MLA 9 deliberately replaced source-type recipes with one nine-element template, so a podcast, a tweet and a monograph are all described by the same slots. Learning the template is faster than looking up types, and it is the only way to cite something the handbook never anticipated. The in-text form is minimal by design: author and page, so the reader can find the entry without breaking the sentence.

Questions about mla citation

What if there is no page number?
Omit it. For sources without pagination, use nothing rather than inventing a locator; paragraph numbers only if the source itself numbers them.
How do I cite a website in MLA?
Author, title of the page in quotation marks, name of the website as the container, publisher if different, date, and the URL without the protocol.
Is MLA still used outside literature?
Mostly within literature, languages and some humanities. Check the module — using MLA where APA or Harvard was specified is a straightforward loss of presentation marks.

A calculator handles the arithmetic. It cannot teach you the method.

If the number is not the part you are stuck on, that is what the service is for — a specialist who explains the working, not just the answer.
