Words into pages, and words against your limit.

Paste your draft to see where it sits against the word limit and roughly how many pages it fills at standard formatting. Both numbers are approximations — the limit is the one that matters.

Inputs

The formula used

pages ≈ words ÷ words per page for your formatting

Double-spaced 12-point Times New Roman with one-inch margins runs about 250 words a page; single-spaced, about 500. Any change to font, spacing or margins changes the page count without changing the word count.

Page counts are a formatting artefact.

The same 2,500 words fills ten double-spaced pages or five single-spaced ones, and changing the font from Times to Arial moves it again. This is why institutions set word limits, and why a brief specifying pages will also specify font, size, spacing and margins. Adjusting formatting to hit a page count is visible to anyone who has marked a hundred essays, and it reads as padding.

Questions about essay length

How many pages is 2,000 words?
About eight double-spaced or four single-spaced at 12-point with one-inch margins. Confirm the formatting your brief requires before relying on either figure.
Is a 10% tolerance standard?
It is common but not universal, and some institutions apply a sliding penalty instead. Others count nothing after the limit is reached, which is the harshest version — check the brief.
Does the abstract count?
Usually separately or not at all, along with the title page, reference list and appendices. The brief will say; if it does not, ask the module leader rather than guessing.

A calculator handles the arithmetic. It cannot teach you the method.

If the number is not the part you are stuck on, that is what the service is for — a specialist who explains the working, not just the answer.
